Commissioners in Brunswick County saw a first draft of the proposed 2011-2012 budget Monday night, and it contained a whopper of a tax increase.
County Manager Marty Lawing's document included raising property taxes nearly 14 cents per 100 dollars of property. Property owners would go from paying 30.5 cents to 44.25 cents.
"This is not final," said Chairman Bill Sue after Monday night's meeting. "There are still several steps remaining in the budget process. This is a revenue-neutral budget proposal, and we still have work to do." ("Revenue neutral," but not tax burden neutral, friend.)
