One claim that people have a hard time believing is that city employees make an average of $61k a year. It seems unbelievably high, especially considering that the median individual income in New Hanover County during 2009 was about $29k.
Well, they made about $61k last year, and they'll do it again this year.
(As a side note, that $29k does not include benefits, but the average city employee makes $43k in just salary without benefits. This is also verified by a note from a note from the city Finance Director to staff and council members.)
